Skateboards
Passion Project
Each of these unique skateboard designs represents a species in plight: the monarch butterfly, honey bees, and the red-eyed tree frog. They have been dwindling in numbers due to pesticide use, the disappearance of milkweed(for the monarch to feed on), and a variety of other reasons. Although the monarch is making a comeback, “yay!”
The process
For my skateboard design, I first created a sketch of each board, then traced it onto copy paper. Then I used Ai Trace to digitize the lines of my sketches, which resulted in a double outline around each drawing reminiscent of the style where the artist leaves the borders white. I decided to keep them white and liked how it turned out. After colorizing the trace, I added the texture to the backgrounds of each board. The final touch was creating some of my own lettering on each board. I drew the necessary letters and once again used Ai Trace to render the drawings into the computer.
Created Font
This is a sample of the font I created for the boards, and what it looks like after Ai Trace. Here you can see the “outline,” of the rendering. On the illustrations I kept the outline white and I decided to go with all white for the text, and then colorized the insects.
